Deep Purple, David Bowie and Nirvana songs inducted into Grammy Hall of Fame

Founded in 1973, the collection celebrates singles and album tracks at least 25 years old that have qualitative or historical significance.

25 new titles are added each year, with Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke on the Water’, David Bowie’s ‘Changes’, Elvis Presley’s ‘Jailhouse Rock’, Rod Stewart’s ‘Maggie May’ and Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ among those making the cut in 2017.

"The Grammy Hall Of Fame represents all genres of music, acknowledging the diversity of musical expression for which The Academy has become renowned," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy.

"Memorable and inspiring, these recordings are proudly added to our growing catalogue and are an integral part of our musical, social, and cultural history."

Songs are selected by a ‘special member committee’ featuring prominent figures from all branches of the music industry before The Recording Academy's National Board of Trustees give final approval.

Since its inception 44 years ago, the Grammy Hall of Fame has inducted a total of 1,038 recordings. All tracks are immortalised at the Grammy Museum in downtown Los Angeles entertainment complex L.A. Live.
