David Bowie remembered on the first anniversary of his death
Today marks the one-year anniversary of David Bowie’s untimely death at the age of 69.
The music legend died from cancer on 10th January 2016, just two days after his birthday and the release of what would ultimately be his swansong record ‘Blackstar’.
Celebrations of the Star Man’s life were held over the weekend to mark what would have been his 70th year, including a Gary Oldman curated extravaganza at London’s Brixton Academy.
Fresh from performing ‘All The Young Dudes’ and ‘Suffragette City’ in Brixton on Sunday night, Def Leppard singer and Planet Rock DJ Joe Elliott said he’s still struggling to comprehend Bowie’s passing.
“David Bowie’s death affected me immensely, actually. It was almost like losing my father for the second time who I’d lost five years previously,” Joe said.
“I know that might sound a little over the top but I understand why now there were so many candlelit vigils when (John) Lennon was murdered.”
Across the pond tonight there will be a Celebrating David Bowie concert at New York venue Terminal 5 featuring the Bowie musicians who performed in Brixton on Sunday including Mike Garson, Earl Slick and Gail Ann Dorsey.
Guest performers will include Living Colour, Kate Pierson of the B52s and ex-International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield whose performance of ‘Space Oddity’ in 2015 went viral.
On Bowie’s official social channels today, a stunning animation by artist Helen Green has been shared featuring 28 images associated with every Bowie studio album.

In London, hundreds of fans are expected to descend upon the David Bowie mural in Brixton that became the shrine to the musician after his death. Created by Australian artist James Cochran, the painting was recently covered in Perspex to protect it.
On social media, Bowie’s wife Iman, son Duncan Jones and musical collaborators Brian Eno, Tony Visconti and Woody Woodmansey are among those who have paid tribute to the late star in recent days marking his birthday and the anniversary of his death.
