David Bowie posthumously sells 5 million records in the UK
David Bowie has sold more than 5 million records in the UK since his death two years ago today (10th January).
According to Official Charts Company figures, fans have consumed 2 million albums and 3.1 million singles since the Starman’s passing on Monday 10th January 2016.
The figures tally Bowie’s UK physical sales, digital downloads and stream-equivalent sales from his extensive back catalogue.
Bowie’s swansong album, January 2016’s ‘Blackstar’, is his most popular album since his death shifting 446,000 copies across all formats. 2008 greatest hits collection ‘Best of Bowie’ has sold 335,000 units, while 2016 retrospective ‘Legacy’ is third with 247,000 sales.
Seminal albums ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’ and ‘Hunky Dory’ have sold over 100,000 copies in the last two years together with ‘Nothing Has Changed – The Very Best Of.’
David Bowie is also one of the figureheads of the vinyl revival with 285,000 sales since January 2016.
On the singles chart, 1977 anthem ‘Heroes’ emerges as the most popular choice by fans since his passing, with 397,000 combined sales across the period.
Chart-topping Queen collaboration ‘Under Pressure’ is second (203,000 sales) is also Bowie’s most streamed track of the last two years on 16.7 million plays on these shores.
