He says that their "1987" album saved Whitesnake

Sleaze Roxx reports that in an interview on US radio Coverdale revealed that he had been sidelined with a serious illness during the recording of the album and that doctors had been sceptical whether he would ever sing again.

"He (the doctor) put a small flashlight into my mouth... and said, 'This is the worst sinus infection I've ever seen, I'm surprised you could even talk'. I came back and prepared for surgery and a 50% chance I would never be able to perform again."

And despite $3m of debt and a near career destroying illness, Coverdale revealed that he made a big gamble. "We shot three videos in two weeks, "Still of the Night", "Here I Go Again", "Is This Love" and things just went nuts."

The self-titled album is 25 years old in a couple of weeks.
