As always there are dozens of awards across a smorgasbord of genres but the most notable rock nomination is Chris Cornell who is posthumously up for The Best Rock Performance gong for ‘The Promise’, lifted from the soundtrack to the 2017 movie of the same name.

The late singer picked up 14 nominations and won two awards in his lifetime - Best Hard Rock Performance for ‘Black Hole Sun’ and Best Metal Performance for ‘Spoonman’ in 1995 – and ‘The Promise’ will go head-to-head with Leonard Cohen’s ‘You Want It Darker’, Foo Fighters’ ‘Run’, Kaleo’s ‘No Good’ and Nothing More’s ‘Go To War’.

Rock acts who picked up multiple nominations include Mastodon (Best Rock Album, Best Metal Performance), Foo Fighters (Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song) and Metallica (Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song).

Elsewhere, The Rolling Stones are in the mix for the Best Traditional Blues Performance honour for ‘Blue & Lonesome’, Roger Waters’ ‘Is This The Life We Really Want?’ is among the Best Engineered Album, Non Classical nominees and Bruce Springsteen is up for the Best Spoken Word Album for ‘Born To Run’.

As the only peer-selected music award, the Grammys are voted on by the Recording Academy's membership body of music makers, who represent all genres and creative disciplines, including recording artists, songwriters, producers, mixers, and engineers.

"I'm inspired by this year's nominees and the incredible talent each possesses," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the Recording Academy.

"Their recordings are a true testament to how creatively alive and meaningful our music industry has become. Each nominee uses their craft to inspire, uplift, and tell stories of our world through their artistry. They provide a vibrant soundtrack that represents the highest level of excellence and continues to impact and reflect our culture."

The final round of voting takes place from 7th to 21st December before the winners are unveiled at the Grammy Awards ceremony at Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday 28th January 2018.
