Chili Pepper's "Bridge" Identified?

The song 'Under The Bridge', was a major turning point for the Chili Peppers as it propelled them from cult funk rockers to a hugely successful mainstream act in a really short space of time. 

The song describes singer Anthony Kiedis' battles with drug addiction and, according to his autobiography Scar Tissue, a day in LA spent "downtown with f***ing gangsters shooting speedballs under a bridge". Despite the song's success and the legions of Chili Peppers fans that have speculated about the location of the bridge, it has never been identified.

However, journalist Mark Haskell Smith from Vulture.com has spent a great deal of effort trying to find the bridge and he thinks that he's been successful.

He thinks that the bridge is in city's MacArthur Park and of the pedestrian bridge, Smith writes: "Inside, it looked like a school art project had been painted over decades of tagging, layers of violent history under a family friendly mural... but not that long ago it was the stomping ground of gangbangers and dope slingers."

He adds: "It must be the bridge in the song. It links Sixth and Union — the intersection Kiedis claims he was walking toward in Scar Tissue— with the drug dealers at Seventh and Hoover. And, unlike the other bridges, it provides a discreet location for private time with personal demons."
