Chili Pepper Frusciante Named Best Modern Guitarist

Slash & Hammett also make BBC poll

Former Red Hot Chili Pepper, John Frusciante, has been named the best guitarist of the past 30 years in a BBC poll.

The poll, which took place over a few weeks, was voted for by the public and saw Frusciante beat the likes of Slash and Kirk Hammett to the number 1 spot.

Slash, who finished second in the poll, commented on the result saying that he doesn’t consider himself to be a "legendary” guitarist yet.

"All the guys who I consider guitar legends are the pioneers of electric guitar, rock 'n' roll guitar and blues guitar as well," he said. "So I'm still struggling to keep up. I definitely don't put myself in the legend category."

Here’s the top ten from the Axe Factor poll:

  1. John Frusciante - Red Hot Chili Peppers
  2. Slash - Guns n' Roses
  3. Matt Bellamy - Muse
  4. Johnny Marr - The Smiths
  5. Tom Morello - Rage Against The Machine
  6. Kirk Hammett - Metallica
  7. Jonny Greenwood - Radiohead
  8. Prince
  9. Jack White - White Stripes
  10. Peter Buck – REM
