Blackberry Smoke drummer Brit Turner diagnosed with brain tumour
He's undergoing surgery
Blackberry Smoke drummer Brit Turner has been diagnosed with a brain tumour just over two months after suffering a heart attack.
The Georgian southern rockers issued a statement on Facebook saying that Turner suffered “an episode” earlier this week and he was taken to hospital.
Turner received an MRI scan at hospital where doctors discovered a tumour on the frontal lobe of his brain. He is now undergoing surgery and further tests.
Understandably, Blackberry Smoke have postponed their show in Montgomery, Alabama tonight (4th November) and their planned show at Daily's Place in Jacksonville, Florida will be performed acoustically.
Brit Turner suffered a serious heart attack at his home in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday 14th August and he underwent surgery to have a stent fitted to his coronary artery.
Blackberry Smoke’s full statement reads:
“Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.
“Friends, we have to postpone Friday night’s show in Montgomery, AL. At the performing arts center. It was supposed to be a Whippoorwill 10th anniversary show, but due to the current circumstances we do not feel right about trying to put something together for this FRIDAY. Earlier this week, Brit Turner suffered an episode and needed to be taken to the ER. He was feeling alright but due to the issues from his recent heart attack, his medical team elected to keep him in the hospital and run a series of tests to determine what could have caused the situation. Upon receiving an MRI they found a tumor on his brain in the frontal lobe. We do not know any more than that at this time. Brit is now undergoing surgery and more testing to find out what his next steps to a healthy recovery will be. Due to how close the Montgomery show is, and taking into consideration people’s plans, we need to postpone it at this time. Hold on to your tickets as the new date will be announced soon. If you can’t wait, we understand, refunds are available at your point of purchase for this show.
“Our plan is to be in Jacksonville at Daily’s Place this SATURDAY with The Turnpike Troubadours and perform that show acoustic without Brit. We ask that you please bear with us for a few more days while we make determinations about other upcoming shows. We want to allow Brit and his family time to process everything going on, and to consult with their physicians on the best way to get our brother back out with us. Thank you all for the support and understanding.”
Everyone at Planet Rock wishes Brit Turner a full and speedy recovery.

The greatest moustaches in rock music:
Derek Smalls’ moustache
Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls (aka Harry Shearer) has sported his mutton chops moustache ever since he joined the band in 1967 following the exit of original bassist Ronnie Pudding. In fact, Smalls' voluminous moustache has outlived at least 12 Spinal Tap drummers.
James Hetfield’s moustache
The Metallica frontman clearly takes aesthetic inspiration from The Lion in the Wizard of Oz, however, unlike his feline doppelgänger, Papa Het cuts a fearsome figure with his moustache.

Duane Allman’s moustache
The Allman Brothers Band leader was truly one of the finest guitarists ever, and he also sported arguably the greatest facial hair in the history of rock music with his colossal ginger mutton chops moustache. Duane Allman was in his early 20s when he shot to fame, however his spectacular moustache made him look twice that age.

David Crosby’s moustache

Tony Iommi’s moustache
Writing in his memoir Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi said he initially started growing a moustache to hide a scar on his lip. Revealing he was eight or nine at the time of the injury, Iommi wrote: "(I was) running down this gravel road when I tripped and along my lip. The scar is still there now. The kids even started calling me Scarface, so I got a terrible complex about that." As showcased in this picture from 1986, Tony Iommi's moustache is now firmly entrenched in rock n' roll folklore.

Johnny Depp’s moustache
The actor and Hollywood Vampires rocker's moustache follows the contours of his upper lip and is often combined with a soul patch and goatee beard. Depp hit tabloid headlines in October 2022 when he shaved his moustache and beard off.
Roy Wood’s moustache
Prior to Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard when a gargantuan beard took over his face, Roy Wood had this extraordinary moustache when he was a member of The Move.

The Beatles’ moustaches
George Harrison, Ringo Starr, John Lennon and Paul McCartney all debuted their moustaches on the cover to their 1967 album 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. Such was their ubiquitous popularity, the Fab Four were credited with reviving the popularity of moustaches across the globe.
Jon Lord's moustache
No Greatest Moustaches countdown would be complete without late Deep Purple keyboard wizard Jon Lord. In later life, he embraced a goatee, however in the 60s, 70s and 80s his moustache reigned supreme.
John Bonham's moustache
Led Zeppelin's powerhouse drummer John Bonham and his beautiful moustache in 1968.
