One of the greatest days in heavy metal history
Last updated 6th Jul 2025
A truly historic day and night, Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell Back to the Beginning concert on Saturday 5th July is now firmly entrenched in heavy metal folklore.
After an unannounced DJ set from Slipknot’s Sid Wilson, the historic gig kicked off promptly at 1pm with Atlanta, Georgia metal monoliths Mastodon taking to Villa Park stage, performing their own songs ‘Black Tongue’ and ‘Blood and Thunder’, and a cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘Supernaut’ where they were joined by Gojira drummer Mario Duplantier, Tool’s Danny Carey and Slipknot’s Eloy Casagrande on small percussion kits.
This set the benchmark for the rest of the day, with Rival Sons, Anthrax, Lamb of God, Alice in Chains, Gojira, Pantera, Tool, Slayer, Guns N’ Roses and Metallica all performing a mix of their own songs and seminal tracks from Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s fabled back catalogues.
Two supergroups featuring revolving line-ups took to the stage with big names like Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt (in a Diogo Jota shirt during Supergroup A’s set), The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Yungblud all making surprise appearances alongside the plethora of previously announced artists.
Expertly hosted by Jason Momoa throughout the day, there was even a Drum Off with Chad Smith, Travis Barker and Danny Carey battling it out during a storming rendition of ‘Symptom of the Universe’.
The star-studded performances all led to the main event – Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath’s last-ever live performances at Villa Park, just a stone’s throw away from where they were born and raised and formed Sabbath all those decades ago.
Arriving on stage via a trap door in his customised bat throne, a visibly emotional Ozzy Osbourne told the adoring Villa Park faithful, "It's so good to be on this stage... You have no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
Flanked by his powerhouse band of Tommy Clufetos (drums), Mike Inez (bass), Adam Wakeman (keyboard) and Zakk Wylde (guitar), Ozzy sang his timeless solo tunes 'I Don't Know', 'Mr. Crowley', 'Suicide Solution', 'Mama, I'm Coming Home' and 'Crazy Train'.
Ozzy was then joined on stage by his Black Sabbath band mates Bill Ward, Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi one last time.
Sabbath brought the all-day show to a thunderous and triumphant close with 'War Pigs', 'N.I.B', 'Iron Man' and the closing 'Paranoid'.
