Avenged Sevenfold have issued a statement urging their fans to listen to their upcoming new album 'Life is but a Dream...' as a whole.

The Download Festival 2018 headliners announced their eighth studio album ‘Life is but a Dream’ this week and shared lead single ‘Nobody’ and its Ray Harryhausen-esque skeleton-themed video.

Avenged Sevenfold said the record is inspired by the writings of French philosopher Albert Camus, and it embraces thematically weighty themes such as existentialism and absurdism.

In a statement issued on their official website, Avenged Sevenfold have encouraged their fans to listen to the record from start to finish rather than skipping tracks.

“Avenged Sevenfold’s new album, Life Is But A Dream, is best served as a whole and consumed en masse to truly appreciate its musical breadth and sonic depth,” the band say.

“Written and recorded over the span of 4 years, it was produced by Joe Barresi and Avenged Sevenfold in Los Angeles and mixed by Andy Wallace in the Poconos, PA.

“The album is a journey through an existential crisis; a very personal exploration into the meaning, purpose and value of human existence with the anxiety of death always looming.”

Avenged Sevenfold's statement

Echoing Avenged Sevenfold’s sentiment, in an interview with Metal Express Radio in 2020, Stryper frontman Michael Sweet lamented the impact streaming was having on album listening.

"The thing I hate about it is it's disheartening when you go and spend three months of your life working so hard on an album, and you release it, and then it goes up on iTunes and people download three songs," Sweet explained. "And you can literally see which songs have been downloaded more and which songs have been downloaded less.

"The album is the artwork and the piece of art — not the songs individually or on their own. So we want people to listen to the whole album. It's like reading a book — you just take two chapters and you leave the other 49.

“Or watching a movie — you just watch 15 minutes of it, the best scenes, and then you leave the rest. That's what's happened with albums, and it breaks my heart.”

Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘Life Is But A Dream…’ is released on Friday 2nd June 2023 and it comes with artwork from renowned artist Wes Lang.

Avenged Sevenfold - 'Life is but a Dream...'

Following the album’s release, Avenged Sevenfold will play two headline shows at Los Angeles Kia Forum on 9th June and New York’s Madison Square Garden on 23rd June.

The arena concerts mark Avenged Sevenfold's first proper New York City on-sale appearance since 2007 and their first Los Angeles county headline on sale since 2009.

Avenged Sevenfold’s last UK performance was their headline slot at Download Festival almost half a decade ago in June 2018.
