Anthrax axeman Scott Ian has taken to social media to stick his boot into one of the indisputable scourges of the modern world… clickbait headlines.

Scott Ian recently conducted an interview with Classic Rock to promote Anthrax’s UK tour this coming November, and during the chat he was asked about his thoughts on Slayer ending their retirement after less than five years.

He replied: “I wrote to Kerry (King, guitarist) and said: ‘Thanks for making me look like a liar.’ We were on Slayer’s goodbye tour for over a hundred shows. During that year and a half together I got the sense that if they said were ending, then that’s what was happening.

“Personally I felt it was too soon – the world needs Slayer – but I took them at their word on that. I really felt that they would be the one band that when they said they were retiring, they’d be done for good.”

In the wake of the interview, numerous news outlets published headlines centred on Ian’s message to King.

Taking umbrage with NME’s headline in particular, Scott Ian took to X and Threads on Sunday (12th May) to chastise the publication.

‘Perfect example of a bulls--- clickbait headline,’ Ian blasted. ‘It should read, “Scott Ian jokingly texts Kerry King.” Lazy cut and paste “journalism” by the NME. Maybe next time reach out to the source.”

Planet Rock hasn't reached out to Scott Ian for further comment.

To save us the hassle, the Anthrax rhythm guitarist, lyricist and co-founder has handily clarified things for us on Instagram, writing: “I was recently asked in an interview with Classic Rock about Slayer’s upcoming shows.

“It seems like some people are confused about how I answered the question - maybe because they weren’t on the call and couldn’t see the smile on my face or hear me laughing as I answered. I wrote a lighthearted text to Kerry and said, “Thanks for making me look like a liar” as a joke. And when I say, “Personally I thought it was too soon” that was in reference to Slayer retiring, not about them coming back to play shows.

“There you have it, straight from the beard’s mouth. If you’d like to read the article which I think is quite good - it’s at the link in my bio.”

I have to explore it more, because I would like to. And actually, we talked even about using 'The Blue Danube' as intro music for the tour or something, but it's so on the nose. It's sort of, like, so obvious, but I still want to explore it when I have a little more time."

For now, what I know is that Meat's legacy will live on through his family - Pearl, Amanda and Revel.
