Adam Lambert rules out making new Queen music: 'To me Queen is Freddie Mercury'

The American Idol runner-up has been the lead singer for Queen + Adam Lambert since 2011, however, unlike Queen + Paul Rodgers, they’re yet to release any new music together.

Dismissing the notion, 37-year-old Lambert told Hunger: “People always ask if we want to record together and I’m not sure it makes total sense because it wouldn’t really be Queen because to me Queen is Freddie (Mercury).

“My favourite thing is collaborating and putting these concerts together and creating on stage – it’s super fulfilling and exiting. To present these ideas to these two gentlemen (Brian May and Roger Taylor) – especially when they like the idea.”

Calling himself “the number one Freddie fan”, Lambert said Queen have always been a presence in his life.

“I didn’t quite wrap my head around to who he was until I was a teenager,” Lambert said. “Once you figure out who is Queen – you realise they’ve been in your pop culture subconscious the whole time.

“They’re one of those bands that their songs are so iconic that you might not know anything about them but you know the damn song!”

Speaking to Planet Rock back in 2016 hinted that he wouldn’t rule out making new music as Queen.

“If we do anything in future, I’d like it to be something new,” Roger said. “I don’t know how new it would sound but I think if Brian and I could come up with a song or two, which we felt fitted (we’d release it).”

Pushed about the likelihood of this coming into fruition, Roger added: “It’s quite possible. We’re really enjoying (performing live). We’ve just come back from the Far East, well about a month ago now, which was phenomenal.

“It’s great to know there’s still a demand (for Queen’s music) and we do love performing with Adam Lambert who’s an incredible singer and a lovely man. A camp Elvis!”

Queen + Adam Lambert play a series of North American arena shows throughout the summer before playing South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia in early 2020.
