Ace Frehley says KISS started to fall apart when they became millionaires
‘Everybody started going their own way…’
Former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has said that the New York stars started to fall apart as the band once they found fame and fortune.
Speaking to the Guitar Tales podcast, he described how KISS went from a tight-knit unit to a group of individuals.
“We created something that will endure way after we’re all dead and buried,” he explained. “I try to let the negative stuff go and focus on the positive memories. We had a lot of fun. We used to really be very closely knit. And we’d have weekly band meetings and get the stuff off our chest that was bothering us.”
The guitarist continued: “Once we became rich, we all became millionaires, everybody started going their own way. Everybody had their own limo. Everybody had their own bodyguard. So, you know, nothing can last forever.”

Recalling the early days when the band members had to work to support their rock star dreams, he added: “Paul (Stanley) worked in a sandwich shop. I delivered liquor. I was a postman for six months. We did all sorts of jobs before we started making the big bucks.
“In the early days, me and Gene (Simmons) used to room together in a Holiday Inn. And then after ‘Alive’ hit we each had our own suites. That's when the band started, you know, everybody was going in their own direction. And it was kind of the beginning of the end.”
Frehley was KISS’ original lead guitarist and played with the band from 1973 until his departure in 1982. He did rejoin the band in 1996 for a successful reunion tour.
He left again following ‘The Farewell Tour’ of 2000-2001, which was originally purported to be the band's final tour.
Despite fan speculation, he did not take part in any of the band's concerts during their 2023 farewell tour more than two decades later.
