AC/DC For Christmas No.1 campaign launched in tribute to Malcolm Young
Organisers behind the 2013 AC/DC for Christmas No.1 campaign have started a new chart bid in the wake of Malcolm Young’s death.
Four years ago, in response to the stupefying fact that AC/DC had never scored a Top 10 UK single, a grassroots campaign was launched by fans to get ‘Highway To Hell’ to the summit on the festive countdown.
Despite missing out on the top spot when it charted at number four, the Bon Scott, Malcolm and Angus Young penned classic did however become AC/DC’s highest ever UK chart entry and duly their first Top 10 single.
When the sad news of Malcolm Young’s deaths broke last week, the admin of the AC/DC for Christmas No.1 Facebook page say they received a cavalcade of requests from fans asking if they intended to launch a fresh campaign for the chart summit in tribute to Malcolm.
They subsequently ran a poll asking the page’s followers if they would be interested, writing: “After the sad news of Malcolm's loss today and producer and brother George last month, our inbox has been overwhelmed today with suggestions to bring back the page's main aim...to put AC/DC at the top of the Christmas chart.
“We did an amazing job in 2013...giving the band it's highest ever UK single chart placing (#4)...but who would be up for having another crack at putting an Acca Dacca classic above an X Factor nobody in tribute to Malcolm, George, and Bon?”
92% voted in favour before the admin ran a separate Twitter poll tentatively asking which track would make the tribute – ‘For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)’ narrowly came out on top with 35% of the vote, followed by ‘Whole Lotta Rosie (34%) and ‘It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)’ (31%).
On Tuesday, the admin officially launched the new campaign with this video:
