Campaigners have joined together in a bid to try and save Royal Cornwall Museum which might be at 'risk of closure' after their funding was removed earlier this month.

Youth protestors and other locals held signs reading 'Save the Museum' and 'Protect Cornish Culture' sat by County Hall in Truro before trying to prompt discussions with councillors and continue the protest through the city centre.

It's after it was announced Cornwall Council has withdrawn its funding as part of the Culture and Creative Investment Programme.

Lilly, 17, part of Cornwall Youth Climate Alliance, said: "It makes it the only museum in the country that's completely lost council funding and it's just an appalling decision. Cornish history is really important.

"I'm a history student and I think the museum is just such a wonderful resource, especially younger people and kids and school groups, it's such a great place to go and learn about the history of our county and understand where we've come from".

Tean, 16, added: "I think the Royal Cornwall Museum is a vital part of Cornish culture and I think it's done an amazing job in educating people, especially young children, about the history of Cornwall.

"They don't deserve to have lost this funding and to face the risk of closure".

Among those campaigning was Truro City Councillor, Bob Smith, who said: "I'm not here representing the Council, I'm here representing myself personally because I think the art and culture in Truro is getting a very bad deal and this will have a major impact on what Truro has to offer.

"I'm hoping Cornwall Council reinstate the previous grants and take it seriously in terms of cultural development in Cornwall.

"It's especially for the young people, because that's their heritage, that's their history and if you take that away you're removing a very important educational aspect but you're also removing some of the identity of Cornwall and that's just criminal as far as I'm concerned".

The protest will continue through Truro with chants and speeches outside the Royal Cornwall Museum.
