A young man who died after a serious crash in south-east Cornwall has been named as Royal Navy sailor Kyran Carney.

The 19-year-old was a passenger when two cars collided at Torpoint on Friday afternoon (7th) October.

The local teenager's family have described his death as devastating, saying they announced it with "great sadness".

Family Statement

"It is with great sadness as a family to announce the passing of Kyran Philip Carney, 19 years old, of Torpoint, Cornwall.

"On Friday 7th October 2022, Kyran, a young Royal Navy sailor, was fatally injured whilst a passenger in a vehicle collision.

"The family respectfully requests time to process this devastating news and to grieve whilst we await the outcome of ongoing investigations".

The collision happened at around 2.30pm, closing the A374 until the early hours of Saturday morning.

Four people were injured and taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment - including an elderly woman in her 80s who suffered life-threatening injuries.

A 20-year-old man from Newcastle - arrested on suspicion of causing both death and serious injury by dangerous driving - has been released under investigation, pending enquiries.

Devon & Cornwall Police say they are continuing enquiries to establish the circumstances of the collision.
