Drivers in Cornwall are advised to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys, ahead of the next phase of work to turn a busy stretch of the A30 into dual carriageway.

Overnight road closures will be in force between Chiverton Cross and the Boxheater junction next week and from Chiverton Cross to Carland Cross in November, while realignment work is carried out.

The work will involve removing kerbs and installing new surfacing at Chiverton roundabout, realigning barriers and surfacing at the Chybucca junction and temporary roundabout, earthworks at Nanteague, drainage and telecoms work and preparatory work - ahead of further realignment of the A30 in the new year.

How will the work affect my journey?

The newly aligned A3075 will open on Sunday 16th October and will form part of the diversion route when the A30 will be closed overnight.

The stretch between Chiverton Cross and the Boxheater junction will be closed 8pm - 6am on weeknights only, from Monday 17th October to Saturday 22nd October.

During the closures, eastbound traffic will be diverted via the reopened A3075 and the B3285 from Goonhavern to rejoin the A30, with the westbound diversion in reverse.

Five more overnight closures, between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross, will take place from Monday 7th November to Saturday 12th November, with the A30 temporary realignment scheduled to take place within that week.

During this second week of overnight closures, eastbound traffic will be diverted via the A3075 to Quintrell Downs and the A3058 to rejoin the A30 at Summercourt, while westbound traffic will follow the same diversion.

Newquay-bound traffic from Truro can also follow the A39, A3076 and A3058.

Neil Winter, National Highways' Senior Project Manager for the A30 scheme, said: "We are keeping disruption to an absolute minimum by carrying out the work overnight when traffic levels are lower.

"We understand roadworks can be frustrating, the closures are required to progress alignment of the new A30 route, and we've communicated the traffic switch well in advance to local communities and ensuring access is maintained for residents and businesses.

“We thank people in advance for their co-operation and patience and, in the meantime, we advise drivers to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys during this work".

The £330 million road upgrade is scheduled to be open to traffic in winter 2023.
