Major rescue after large granite boulders fell and trapped two people in Cornish village

Firefighters, paramedics and the air ambulance were sent to Madron near Penzance on Saturday (21st August)

Huge granite boulders have fallen on top of two people in a Cornish village, leaving them trapped.

Paramedics rushed to the scene at Madron near Penzance, before calling in firefighters.

Crews from the town, Tolvaddon and St Just helped rescue the casualties using specialist lifting equipment.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that Cornwall Air Ambulance was also scrambled.

As of Sunday morning (August 22nd), the extent of the injuries of those involved had not been confirmed.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "Critical control received a call from ambulance requesting our attendance to assist their crews in removing large granite boulders that had fallen on top of two persons.

"Crews from St Just, Tolvaddon and Penzance, supported by a flexi-duty officer, attended.

"Crews used crash rescue and specialist lifting equipment to release the persons.

"Once released the persons were handed over to West Country Ambulance".

Devon and Cornwall Police have been approached for a statement and updates will appear below.
