Two large gorse fires on Cornish peninsula in two days

Crews were called to separate incidents in the Goonhilly area on Monday and Tuesday

Firefighters from west Cornwall have been called to two gorse fires on the Lizard Peninsula in as many days.

A crew from St Keverne responded to the first blaze in the Goonhilly area on Monday March 14th.

They arrived to find a large area of gorse burning, before calling in back-up from Mullion and Helston.

Commenting on social media, drivers in the area said the cloud of smoke was so big it could be seen from Helston.

Teams used natural breaks and beaters to douse the flames and remained at the scene until just before 7pm.

On Tuesday afternoon (15th March), crews from Mullion, Helston and St Keverne were called to a second blaze on the peninsula.

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service said: "Critical Control received a call at 16:05 regarding smoke seen coming from the area of Ruan Minor.

"One appliance from Mullion was mobilised to the incident.

"On arrival firefighters made pumps three, due to approximately two hectares of high gorse alight.

"Helston and St Keverne were additionally mobilised.

"Crew used beaters to extinguish the fire and are currently monitoring for hot spots".
