Truro introduces warmth banks to help with cost of living crisis

The scheme will offer safe spaces for people struggling with soaring energy bills

Truro City Council is introducing a new warmth bank scheme for people to visit during the cost of living.

Truro's 'Warm Welcome Initiative' will provide warm and safe community spaces for people to visit during the winter, to reduce their energy usage at home.

Staff from Truro City Council and CHAOS Group will be on hand to deliver information, advice and guidance as well as signpost towards to support agencies.

The Mayor of Truro, Cllr Steven Webb, said: “We recognise that this is a difficult and challenging time for many people and families, and we are proud to be able to offer some support in the way of the Warm Welcome project.

“It is important now more than ever to come together as a community to support one another and this project encourages just that.”

It is after similar warmth banks being introduced has been considered in towns like Falmouth.

Volunteers on hand at Truro's warmth hubs will be offering tea, coffee and hot food for those attending. People coming along will be encouraged to be involved with creative activities if they'd like to bring along a book or a game along with them.

There'll also be occasional drop-in sessions IAG for further support.

Babs Rounsevell MBE, Managing Director of the CHAOS Group, added: “People are feeling the pinch, with money not going as far as it used to. CHAOS are delighted to be involved in this great common-sense approach and joint working with Truro City Council on this project.”

Sessions start on Monday and will take place throughout the weeks throughout the winter months. The current planned sessions are:

Monday: 9am – 1pm at Moresk Centre, Kemp Close, Truro, TR1 1EF. Monday: 11am – 1pm at Trelander and St. Clements Community Hall, Trelander Highway, Truro, TR1 1PE, with Trelander Food Larder between 11:00am and 12:00pm. Tuesday: 11am – 2pm at Malpas Road Community Centre, Polruan Rd, Truro TR1 1QR. Wednesday: 9am – 4pm at Malabar Community Centre, Albany Road, Truro, TR1 3ND, with Malabar Food Club from 2:30pm - 4:00pm. Thursday: Moresk Centre, Kemp Close, Truro, TR1 1EF from 9am – 4pm, with Truro City Council’s Truro Bridges session between 10:30am and 2:30pm, a free provision of activities such as arts and crafts, wood carvings, mindfulness and song and dance.
