A tribute to the "inspirational" community effort of Cornwall during the pandemic
A moment's reflection was held for all those who have lost their lives or loved ones
The leader of Cornwall Council has used his last Cabinet meeting of 2020 to pay tribute to all those who have helped during the coronavirus pandemic.
Julian German was addressing the meeting this morning when he described the response to the pandemic by the community as “inspirational”.
Opening the online meeting he asked all councillors, council staff and members of the public watching to have a moment to remember those who had lost their lives to coronavirus.
He said: “Earlier in the year we held a minutes silence for those that had died during the pandemic and as we approach the end of the year, we again reflect on all those who have died this year.
“My sincere condolences to those friends and families who have lost loved ones.”
The Independent councillor continued: “Whilst this year has been hugely challenging year, we have lived our values, continuing to listen closely to our communities and work with them, to support our businesses and use the resources available to us wisely. The pandemic has been difficult for us all, but it has also been inspirational, seeing how we, councillors and staff, residents, community groups and businesses, have pulled together to support one and all through such turbulent times.
“Now there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. Vaccinations have begun, with a roll-out plan over the coming months. We all know we must keep following the public health guidelines while the process is carried out, but there is an end in sight.”
Cllr German then paid tribute to the council’s public health team including Rachel Wigglesworth, who has been acting director of public health in Cornwall during the pandemic but was recently appointed to the post full time.
He said: “Our public health team have carried out sterling work, giving clear guidance and carrying out enhanced tracing which has helped to keep us safe. It is of course a team effort but Rachel Wigglesworth has provided calm and effective leadership throughout and I want to take this opportunity to congratulate her on becoming our Director of Public Health having held the post in an interim capacity through the pandemic so far.”
And Cllr German closed his opening remarks by wishing everyone a peaceful Christmas.
He said: “I hope that during the festive period you get some time for quiet reflection and enjoyment, and for those that are working over Christmas, I hope this comes soon after. The new year will be challenging, and we will need to keep following the public health guidance, but as we can see on today’s agenda, for example, with improvements to supporting residents in need and improving air quality, there is hope for the future.
