The charity DISC, based in Newquay, says demand has been rising

A charity in Cornwall delivered over 3,000 presents and toys out over the holidays to homeless people across the Duchy.

Santa's sleigh was full of sacks of Lego sets and other festive gifts, sent from DISC Newquay to families and children in need.

The charity also provided Christmas meals to struggling families, alongside other financial support to those who aren't immediately housed.

This comes with an increase of people coming to the charity for help during an unpredictable winter.

Monique runs DISC. She said: "We actually had to buy extra even after we had the massive mountain that I thought we were never going to get through. It was not just one car, we had two vans and five cars of toys.

"We also had lots of toys from local shops and people who came in with them. Three quarters of that has already left us and we've had to buy extra because we were already running out. We're talking large Christmas sacks full of toys.

"I estimate we'll have sent out between 3000 and 3200 of these sacks".

Along with Christmas presents, the charity offers extra services during the festive season, and provides families with food they can eat around the holidays.

They also support for housing, financial aid and food throughout the year.

Each year they work in partnership with housing to offer emergency accommodation for those who aren't immediately housed and help with money for gas and electric, give out hot meals and food parcels, provide cups of tea and support for bus fares and transport home.

Monique continued: "In one day we had 66 families come in just for vegetables and gammons so they could have something to cook. In two weeks we handed out £6000 in electric and gas.

"It's not because people are not working. By the time they've paid their bills, there's no money for any food. Those are the people we're helping. We see more and more people becoming homeless. It's still happening. People are still getting evicted. It's very dire out there".

The charity have worked harder to provide support for everyone in an uncertain period and have received donations and support across the Duchy during the festive holidays.

Monique told us: "Newquay is phenomenal I cannot tell you how unbelievably grateful that I live in Newquay, people are unbelievably generous. What is happening is locals are looking after locals.

"I've had lots and lots of messages saying thank you so much, it means so much to us. I had one gentleman who's in Fraddon who said he's only just realised that this is all coming from DISC and he's so so grateful.

"We are not going to stop, we will continue all the way through until we see the light at the end of the tunnel".
