Temporary mast to be built in St Ives for the G7 summit

Police say it will provide a secure emergency service network

A temporary mast is going to be built in St Ives for the G7 summit.

It will be installed in the Porthrepta Car Park and will provide crucial support needed for emergency service radio cover during the world leaders event.

The mast will provide additional support to the Airwave network, which is a secure network used by police and other emergency services.

Officers connect to the network via personal radios to communicate with each other when responding to incidents, to their control rooms and it also provides a vital safety feature.

Officials say the existing masts in the area do not have sufficient capacity to support the additional use which will be required for the thousands of officers and emergency service staff who will be deployed during the G7 Summit and so a temporary mast will be put in place to enhance the network.

Motorola Solutions, who are managing the mast and network, have been working alongside Devon & Cornwall Police and Cornwall Council, who have granted permission through emergency powers for the temporary mast to be built on council land.

Temporary building works are due to start in early May and the 25.5 metre mast will be disassembled following the Summit.

During this time, access to the car park may be impacted but we are working closely with those involved to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.

“This is a temporary measure to ensure that any emergency service workers in the area can communicate effectively when responding to incidents, it is not a 5G mast.

“With so many additional officers coming to the area to support the policing operation, this was a required measure to enable us to carry out our duties.”

Superintendent Jo Hall

Local residents who may be impacted by the works will be contacted directly by Police and Motorola in the coming days.
