Earlier today, students at a school in St Austell are protesting over "controversial" school rules - with today's action arranged by the pupils.

This all follows a post on social media written to all Penrice students inviting them to protest about 'toilet rights'.

Just last month, it was required that student must have a pass to go to the toilet - back then, a parent told us that it's "basic human rights", and that her daughter got detention after she went to the toilet after being refused when she asked.

Speaking to us outside the school today, one student said they 'want them to know the rules are unfair', while another parent said the 'strict rules are against their rights'.

During the riots, it has also been reported that tables have been flipped in their protest over the new rules.

Shortly after the protests, the school released a statement to parents and carers.

It said: "Dear Parent/Carer, due to a social media post yesterday evening, some of our students took the decision to protest.

"Our students have the right to express their opinions in a calm and safe manner, however a small number of students* behaviour was unacceptable.

"A number of parents have already been contacted to collect their children. For the majority of our students, lessons and lunch time will continue as normal.

"If you have not been contacted, there is no need to collect your child.

"We hope to engage with them to find a solution that works for everyone as soon as possible. The safety and wellbeing of our students is always our priority."

Previously the school told us that the policies are in place to maximise learning time and minimise disruption.

Many of the pupils involved in the protests have now been sent home.
