There have been reports of a 'sonic boom' like sound being heard across north Cornwall and over the border into Devon.

Locals have taken to social media to share their experiences of the noise on Wednesday afternoon.

It is understood that it shook houses in the area just after midday.

One person has suggested that it could have been down to RAF jets but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that they received a report of a loud bang near Stratton at around 12.15pm. But they don't have any further details.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Sonic boom over North Cornwall 5 mins ago... certainly shook the house"

Another added: "The @RoyalAirForce are having fun in Devon/Cornwall

"Big bang at 12.15pm - shook our poor old cottage so much, I thought the chimney had fallen over!

"Sound's like there's a couple of jets recreating a scene from Top Gun!

"Keep the noise down guys!"

According to NASA, a sonic boom is a "thunder-like noise a person on the ground hears when an aircraft or other type of aerospace vehicle flies overhead faster than the speed of sound, or “supersonic.”

"Air reacts like fluid to supersonic objects. As those objects travel through the air, molecules are pushed aside with great force and this forms a shock wave, much like a boat creates a wake in water. The bigger and heavier the aircraft, the more air it displaces."

The MoD has been contacted for information.
