Three people have been rescued after a boat hit rocks off the Cornish coast and started to sink.

The RNLI lifeboat was called out just before 6.30am on Wednesday morning (13th July) to an area off the Lizard Peninsula to help those onboard the 41ft vessel.

The casualties, who were near Black Head, had managed to abandon ship onto a life raft and one had suffered a head injury.

Crews say the boat was taking on water "at a considerable rate" and was already semi submerged, going down bow first.

RNLI teams on a smaller boat managed to tow the life raft over to the lifeboat and get the three casualties on board to be assessed.

They were taken to Coverack where they were met by a coastguard rescue team.

A spokesperson for the Lizard RNLI Lifeboat Station said: "Once the casualties were safely transferred in to the care of the Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team, RNLB Rose returned to the scene.

"In the interim, Falmouth Coastguard had requested the ILB from Falmouth to attend the casualty vessel to assist with further location details. Sadly, by this time the motor vessel had sunk and was unsalvageable by the attending lifeboat crews."

The team were also asked to assess and report any pollution which may have been caused by the boat's sinking.
