Thousands are set to descend on Falmouth for its first in-person Sea Shanty Festival since the pandemic.

The town is anticipating around 50,000 visitors as the international event will see 70 groups performing across more than 25 venues.

Richard Gates, Festival Chairman said: "The International Sea Shanty Festival gets bigger and better every year, and we are delighted to be able to bring the event back live to our special town this year.

"The festival is a brilliant example of community engagement, with hundreds of volunteers, organisations and businesses coming together with the shanty organising group to make it happen.

"From hosting the world’s media at the G7 Summit, to the acclaimed Falmouth Oyster Festival, Falmouth is a dynamic and creative destination, which punches well above its weight, attracting people from all around the world for its coast, excellent food and drink scene, bustling high street and community spirit".

Organisers have added another stage venue at Church Street Car Park, overlooking Falmouth harbour, and the festival will first start in Discovery Quay at the Skinners Stage from 1pm.

In 2019, the last time it was run before having to be postponed due to COVID-19, an estimated 65,000 attended across the whole weekend with entertainment from 66 groups.

Joe Grady, manager of the Chainlocker, said: "We've gone all out this year. We're one of the venues so we'll have sea shanty singers all day.

"It's great for the business but it's more good for our guests trying to get back out; events like these show that the Summer's about to start and we can go back into the Summer we used to have.

"It's going to be the busiest one yet. It'll no doubt be the busiest one ever in my opinion".

The event is partnered with the RNLI this year and takes place on the same weekend as the Falmouth Classics regatta - one of the largest sailing events in the UK, seeing more than 150 boars attending for races and a parade of sail.
