A sensory wildlife garden has launched at a primary school in Hayle, after schoolchildren were tasked to "help make the world a better place".

Pupils at Bodriggy Academy sent letters around to businesses asking to help make their project a reality - ahead of its official launch today (Friday 20 October).

Deputy Head and School Council Lead, Tamara Carroll, said: "We wanted to achieve our Eco-Schools Green Flag, which Miss Champion was pushing, so we decided as one of our projects we would want to diversify our garden area.

"We met with the children and came up with a big mind-map of everything they wanted to include in a garden - everything that was essential and desirable."

Madeleine Champion used to work on the School Council at Bodriggy and now works at Hayle Academy. She told us about their next steps after coming up with ideas for their garden: "I spoke with some Year 5 students who were really keen to write some letters.

"We talked about what the project was for, who it was going to be helping and they put together some really lovely letters - I think they really touched hearts.

"We sent a bunch of them out to local companies to get some help back, so that really helped move the project along."

Miss Carroll adds: "We were contacted by Anned Ltd, who were the construction company, who took all of our drawings, all our ideas, listened to feedback from the children and us, and within three weeks had got Jewson on board and had created our entire garden area.

So if it wasn't for the contributions from Jewson, with all the materials, and Anned Ltd for putting two men most days on the project and having the brains to think this amazing space through, we wouldn't be where we are. So it's lovely that we could give back to the children who came up with these ideas."

Bodriggy Academy achieved their Eco-Schools Green Flag Award 2023-2024 at the end of June this year.
