Beachgoers across Cornwall are being urged to choose a lifeguarded beach this half term

The RNLI is encouraging those looking to enjoy the south west coastline to visit a beach with lifeguard cover, as schools break up for half term and stormy conditions are predicted.

There are 24 beaches in Cornwall that will have lifeguard cover through until Sunday 1st November.

They are: Tregonhawke, Praa Sands, Fistral, Towan, Watergate Bay, Mawgan Porth, Porthtowan, Perranporth, Gwithian, Porthmeor, Sennen, Constantine, Harlyn, Polzeath, Widemouth, Summerleaze, Poldhu, Porthcurno, Treyarnon, Sandymouth, Hayle Towans, Chapel Porth, Holywell Bay and Crantock.

Safety advice:

"October is one of the best months for surf in the south west, with the water still relatively warm, surfers look forward to a month of more consistent, and quieter waves.

"However, it also comes with autumnal strong winds and stormy conditions, so anyone using the water should take extra care, be responsible and know their limits and capabilities. That way you are not just protecting yourself and loved ones but also, not putting our lifeboat crews and lifeguards at unnecessary risk.

"The best thing for those intending on using the water this week and into half term is to check the weather and surf forecasts and to head to a beach with lifeguard cover, where they can offer advice on your chosen activity and keep an eye on you and the conditions as they change.

"While at the beach, please take notice of the signage, be aware of the tides and conditions and keep a close eye on your family – on the beach and in the water.

"Those who enjoy walking and exploring the coastline should check the weather forecast and local tide times before setting out, and carry a means of communication.

"If you do need help or spot anyone else in danger please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

Lewis Timson, RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor for Newquay

"This month, there are 27 beaches across Devon and Cornwall with lifeguard cover until Sunday 1st November.

"The beaches have remained consistently busy into October and we are expecting even more beach users over half term week, with many visitors still staycationing in the south west and locals looking to enjoy the coast before the temperature drops."

Lewis Timson, RNLI

Lifeguarding hours will be from 10am until 6pm until BST ends on 25th October, after which service will be affected by failing light.
