Cornwall is being given over £567,000 of funding to help provide housing support for vulnerable people.

The government cash will help thousands of vulnerable people who were housed during the pandemic to stay in accommodation this year.

A total of £567,620 has been allocated to Cornwall Council to ensure interim accommodation and support.

The money will help people into the private rented sector, secure interim accommodation such as supported housing and assess the wider support these people need to rebuild their lives.

In the South West, 23 councils will receive a total of £7.4million via the Next Steps Accommodation Programme, which is part of the government’s landmark commitment to end rough sleeping for good.

Across the country, 274 councils will share £91.5million.

“This is great news and will build on the already considerable funding that Cornwall has received from the Government in this area over the past years.

“With the particularly difficult circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic it has never been more important to keep up the fight to eradicate street homelessness once and for all.

“I look forward to seeing this money drawn down and for Cornwall Council to work with some of the excellent partners in Truro and Falmouth to ensure it is best targeted towards those who need it most.”

An additional £13.5million fund will be used to enable local authorities to tackle new or emerging challenges.

Separately, applications are now being considered for a further £161million fund intended to provide over 3,300 additional supported homes this year for those sleeping rough or currently housed in emergency accommodation.

The bidding has now closed and details on successful bids will be announced in due course. This is part of broader support to provide 6,000 such homes over four years.

“I am pleased to see the Government commit more money to help house and support vulnerable people in Cornwall, where our rough sleeping numbers have consistently been falling because of this commitment.

“It is important that Cornwall Council uses this funding, when it has it, to appropriately house those who need assistance most, and I look forward to them working with all organisations within the wider community to ensure this happens in a way that benefits all.”
