Over 500 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Cornwall since Christmas Eve

There were 197 more cases in the last 24 hours alone

The number of recorded coronavirus cases in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly jumped by 338 over the Christmas bank holiday weekend, official figures show.

Public Health England figures show that 5,191 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Monday (December 28th) in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, up from 4,853 the same time on Thursday (Christmas Eve).

And over the last 24 hours, cases in the Duchy have increased by another 197. That means 535 more people have tested positive for the virus since Christmas Eve.

The figures show that 5,388 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Tuesday (December 29th) in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, up from 5,191 the same time on Monday.

The health body is now including Pillar 2 tests – those carried out by commercial partners – alongside Pillar 1 tests, which are analysed in NHS or PHE laboratories and which made up the first stage of the Government's mass testing programme.

The rate of infection in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly now stands at 942 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 3,637.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 53,135 over the period to 2,382,865.

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly's cases were among the 109,552 recorded across the South West, a figure which rose by 2,190 over the period.

Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.
