New funding of £1.5m has been approved to help vulnerable people of all ages in Cornwall return to life after the pandemic.

A range of projects in the county helping residents who had to shield during COVID-19 have received the grant funding.

The Clinically Extremely Vulnerable (CEV) Grant will offer a diverse range of support for people across the county when adjusting to life after months of staying inside.

In a survey by the Cornwall Council from 3,000 households using the grant, it's shown that around 50% continue to shield and isolate 'unofficially' with no legal obligation to do so.

The CEV grant aims to help vulnerable people to experience life again with help with mental health guidance and support to those people still choosing to isolate.

How will the CEV grant support shielders?

The Clinically Extremely Vulnerable (CEV) grant and continued work through Age UK, Volunteer Cornwall and Inclusion Cornwall, aims to help households with travel support for getting vaccines and booster jabs, help with shopping, medicines and household repairs, for vulnerable people who are still isolating.

The funding of £1,423,055 was awarded to Cornwall Council by the Minister of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government to help towards ten projects across Cornwall which are sharing the grant.

The money will be used to support those in the duchy who need it the most.

The projects will each offer a range of services which are designed to improve physical and mental health, increase confidence and enable vulnerable people to become more sociable in a safe and positive environment:

  • Active Cornwall
  • Active 8
  • Age UK
  • Community Energy Plus
  • Cornwall Rural Community Charity
  • Disability Cornwall Council
  • Health for Homeless
  • NHS Kernow CCG
  • CLEAR
  • Cornwall Council Adult Care & Health Commissioning

Councillor Dr Andy Virr, Cornwall Council’s Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care, said: “The grant will make a huge difference to help those vulnerable people who have been cut off from society receive much-needed physical, mental and emotional support to rebuild their confidence as they return to a ‘new normal’ way of living.”
