Newquay Women's Institute is appealing to the public for support - after a burglary at their hall before Christmas.

The incident - which happened on 22nd December - saw the loss of items which have been part of the Women's Institute since 1918.

Anne Wilson, 83, president of the Women's Institute, told us:

"There's royal memorabilia, some of it has been there over 100 years. Most of it is all engraved with Newquay WI.

"There's pictures of the Queen consort on her 70th birthday, a telegram from the Queen on the birth of her first child, acknowledging the fact we sent a card to her."

The group are calling on the public for support to help retrieve some of the items that have been lost.

Anne added: "We are all devastated. I don't think we've had break ins. We've had damage but not stolen. It was very unexpected.

"It's all stuff that can't be replaced"

"It's ruined the Christmas really, it's all we talked about, this break in. If anybody knows anything or seen anything, can they please get in contact with the WI.

"After finding this break in, we are filled with lost trust in our community. The hall is let out to quite a few people. It's not fair that they can't use the hall anymore. If we can get the trust back and find some of this stuff, it would be great."

In a statement from Devon and Cornwall police they said:

"Police received a report of a burglary at premises in Wesley Yard, Newquay.

"This was reported at about 4pm on Friday 23 December.

"A number of items including banners, trophies and photos were stolen.

"Anyone who witnessed something suspicious in the area or has information that could help officers is asked to contact police via our website here or by calling 101 quoting reference number 50220066835.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Newquay's Women's Institute have appealed for public to report anything to Devon and Cornwall Police if they have any further information - or contact someone from the WI directly.
