A police officer who dived into the sea off Penzance to rescue two men drowning is up for a national award.

PC Christopher James went to their aid in July last year and has since been put forward as a nominee for the Police Bravery Awards 2020.

He is among 94 individuals representing 42 forces who are being celebrated for their incredible acts of heroism.

PC James was the first on the scene and spotted a man face down in the water off Penzance’s promenade.

Another man was also in the sea and struggling, having apparently dived in to try and attempt a rescue of his own.

Putting himself at risk, PC James cast off his uniform and ploughed through the waves. He then went about resuscitating the unconscious man.

Despite his incredible efforts, the man sadly died after being airlifted to hospital.

"PC James had undoubtedly saved the other man’s life through his heroic and selfless actions."
