Maps reveal diversion of almost 30 miles near Newquay during G7 Summit
Roads closures and restrictions will also be in force in the St Ives/Carbis Bay area and Falmouth
Last updated 3rd Jun 2021
New maps have revealed the scale of potential travel disruption near key locations for the G7 Summit in Cornwall.
We already know the A3074 to St Ives will be shut for four days when world leaders descend on Carbis Bay.
A massive diversion will be in place around Cornwall Airport Newquay due to road closures.
It will take drivers travelling between Newquay and Mawgan Porth on a detour of almost 30 miles, via the A39 and up towards Padstow.
Road closures and parking restrictions will also be in force in the St Ives and Falmouth areas.
ID check points will be in force for residents, workers and business owners in the secure zones, where they will have to provide two forms of ID.
At the most recent Facebook Live Q&A, Devon & Cornwall Police and Cornwall Council confirmed leaflets, including the maps, were being sent to local residents.
Superintendent Jo Hall said: "Our local policing teams and Council community link officers have been working together to engage with communities in St Ives, Falmouth and Newquay since the announcement of the event.
"This campaign aims to further inform and reassure communities about the impact of the event in the local areas and the temporary changes they can expect.
"We are working hard to minimise the impact of the Summit on local communities and we are engaging regularly with residents and other partners in the affected areas. We would encourage residents to speak to their local police officers about any concerns they might have.
"There will be a certain level of disruption caused by the restrictions and closures, but we hope that people will understand that these are essential to ensure a safe and secure event for delegates and the wider community.
"We are thankful for the support and understanding of residents and visitors and we hope that the Summit will leave a positive legacy for Cornwall".
Superintendent Jo Hall
What restrictions are in force around Newquay?
There will be a number of road closures and parking restriction orders in place around Cornwall Airport Newquay for the duration of the event, beginning at 6pm on 9th June and ending at 11.59pm on 13th June.
These include temporary closures on the main road around the airport at various times.
Other minor roads will be shut for the full duration of the summit, including the B3276 near Watergate Bay, however officials say the beach will be accessible.
Roads connecting the smaller villages are also accessible, but the official diversion route for drivers travelling between Newquay and Mawgan Porth will avoid those.
It uses the A392 and A39 past St Columb, the B3274 towards Padstow and the B3276 back down to Mawgan Porth, which is roughly around 27 miles.
