A secondary school has revealed new plans for an extension which will increase capacity and add new facilities.

Launceston College has launched consultation on the plans for a new three-storey block.

The new teaching block will have 13 new science laboratories; group work and science preparation rooms; eight general classrooms; small group rooms; office space; an accessible lift; and toilet facilities on all floors.

As a result of the new building existing areas will be remodelled for general and specialist teaching spaces.

These will include additional art studios; additional design and technology workshops and kitchens; a PE changing space; refurbishment of general teaching space; larger dining areas; and a repositioned main reception area.

On its website the school explains: “In conjunction with Cornwall Council, Launceston College is proposing an expansion to provide more secondary school places for local students.

“Launceston College is part of a Multi Academy Trust and trustees see the proposed expansion of the school as an opportunity to not only meet the increasing demand for places within the local area, but additionally being able to develop and improve the current infrastructure, existing facilities and invest in the site for current and future students.

“Launceston College is an inclusive comprehensive school that sits within the heart of our community. We want our students to achieve academic success whilst developing the skills and confidence they need to move onto aspirational pathways and careers when they leave us.

“The expansion will enable us to continue to deliver a first-class education to all of the young people in the Launceston area.”

The school said that the expansion would also help increase space for the school’s Area Resource Base which helps students needing additional support.

It said: “The resource base is designed to meet the needs of secondary aged students with severe and complex learning difficulties across the age range from 11 to 16.

“This specialist unit is consistently oversubscribed because the demand for places outstrips our current intake. The provision is popular with parents due to the students being catered for on an individual basis with regard for inclusion in the mainstream college.”

Launceston College has invited the public to give feedback on the proposed expansion plans and has provided a form on its website. The consultation will close on February 28th.
