Firefighters spend night battling third major gorse fire in Cornwall in as many days

Cornwall's firefighters have spent the night battling another major gorse fire - this time on the Lizard.

The blaze broke out at Zoar near St Keverne just after 11.30pm on Sunday 25th April.

Crews from St Keverne, Mullion and Helston called in back-up from Falmouth, Penzance, Hayle and Tolvaddon.

At its height, the flames had engulfed an area around the size of five football pitches and were being fanned by strong winds.

Teams from St Ives and Falmouth were checking for hotspots first thing on Monday, however the fire is now out.

"We are currently dealing with a gorse fire being fanned by high winds in the Zoar area.

"Appliances in attendance from St Keverne, Mullion and Helston Fire Stations along with the Water Carrier from Helston and 2 Flexi Duty Officers. They are using hosereel and beaters to try to fight the fire.

"Update @ 2333hrs: The fire covers 4 hectares and is burning on 2 fronts. The Incident Commander has requested further assistance from Falmouth and Penzance major appliances.

"Update @ 0132hrs: Make Pumps 7 requested from Hayle and Tolvaddon.

"Update @ 0330- Appliances from St Ives and Falmouth are now on scene monitoring for hot spots all other appliances have left scene, it is believed around a mile of gorse has been effected by fire.

"Update @ 0630- all appliances have left scene the fire and any hotspots have now been extinguished.

"Further updates will be posted when we have more information".

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service

The blaze follows separate gorse fires near Redruth and at Roche Rock, which broke out on Saturday and reignited on Sunday (25th April).

Cornwall Fire and Rescue have issued a warning about the risk of wildfires, due to the long dry spell and strong winds.
