People are being urged to avoid an area in the middle of Hayle, because of smoke billowing from the scene of a large fire.

The blaze has broken out at a derelict building in the Beatrice Terrace area, near the Texaco garage.

Photos show smoke streaming from what is understood to be the former R&J Supplies site.

Posting on social media, locals have said the smoke "proper stinks" and that it can be seen from as far as the park.

Cornwall Fire & Rescue and Devon & Cornwall Police are urging residents to keep doors and windows closed.

Both have posted a warning on Twitter, with Cornwall FRS saying: "There is currently an ongoing incident in the Beatrice Terrace area of #Hayle near the Texaco garage. Please avoid the area.

"If you smell smoke - close windows and doors and stay inside".

As of Tuesday lunchtime (11th October), firefighters from the town, Tolvaddon and Penzance were battling the fire.

In a statement, Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service said: "One fire appliance from Hayle, two fire appliances from Tolvaddon and one fire appliance from Penzance are in attendance at a fire involving rubbish inside a derelict building, measuring 20 metres by 20 metres.

"Firefighters are using breathing apparatus and two jets to extinguish the fire.

"The advice to people in the area is to keep windows shut, as there is a significant amount of smoke".

At 3pm Cornwall FRS added said: "Firefighters are making good progress with extinguishing a large amount of rubbish alight within the derelict building.

"A wall has been removed to assist with access to the fire.

"Machinery is being used to turn over the waste and hosereels are being used to dampen it down.

"The incident will be ongoing for a few more hours".

Inrix Traffic and Travel said: "Beatrice Terrace both ways blocked due to fire service activity from B3301/Madison Close to Texaco Station. Traffic is coping well".
