House fire breaks out in Cornish village and spreads to other homes

Crews from both sides of the Tamar have been battling a huge house fire in a village in South East Cornwall.

The blaze broke out in the end property of a terrace at Wilcove, Torpoint in the early hours of Sunday morning (7th August).

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service later confirmed the flames were spreading to other homes on the row and photos show the fire has caused significant damage.

Teams from Torpoint and Camels Head took the initial call, before scrambling back-up from Looe, Liskeard, Saltash, Callington and Crownhill.

Cornwall FRS said firefighters were having to navigate extra hazards, including the building's structural safety, water supplies and live electricity.

It is understood that some residents had to be evacuated, but there are no reports of anyone having been injured.

In a statement, Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service said: "Appliances from Torpoint and Camels Head Fire Station (Devon & Somerset FRS) were mobilised to a property fire. On arrival the building was declared well alight and two further appliances were mobilised from Looe and Liskeard".

By 2.40am, the incident had been declared as 'Make Pumps 8', the fire had spread to the roof space and appliances from Saltash, Liskeard, Callington and Crownhill had also been called.

An update at 3.30am said: "Firefighters are using breathing apparatus and hose reels on a row of terraced houses. Fire crews have reported the fire in the end property is well alight and spreading to other properties in the row.

"Firefighters are currently having to navigate numerous additional hazards including the buildings structural safety, access , water supplies and live electricity".

Shortly after 10am, Torpoint Community Fire Station said: "This incident is still ongoing with crews dampening down the area".
