Two teenage boys who bravely ran to the aid of people during the shooting in Plymouth have been chosen as the 'Community Heroes' who will turn on the Barbican Christmas lights.

Best friends Caine Taylor and Ethan Brierly, now 15-years-old, rushed to comfort victims and warned others of the unfolding tragedy, helping to keep them safe.

Nominated by Caine’s sister and others, the duo have been chosen by Plymouth Waterfront Partnership to turn on the 2021 Barbican's Christmas lights on Saturday, accompanied by the Lord Mayor and Santa.

A team of volunteers will also be hosting a bucket collection from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, raising money for the Plymouth Together Fund.

The fund supports people affected by the tragedy in Keyham, where five people lost their lives.

Diane Mansell, Chief Executive of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, said: "We received more than 50 nominations when we asked the people of Plymouth to nominate their Community Heroes to turn on the Christmas lights, and we’re delighted that Caine and Ethan will be able to join us on the day.

"They have been so incredibly brave, and they went above and beyond to support their community – this is our opportunity to give them a huge thank you, so please come along on the day to show your support".

The lights will be turned on after 5.30pm following a day of family friendly activity on the Waterfront.

Free-of-charge entertainment and activities start at 12pm, with everything from storytelling and face painting to Santa’s Grotto and Christmas crafts.

There are also performances from local choirs in the performance areas on Southside Street and Quay Square.

Elves, stilt walkers and even the Grinch will be roaming around the Waterfront entertaining the crowds too.
