Helston's famous Flora Day has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The annual event, which celebrates the coming of spring and end of winter, will not be going ahead in 2021.

The ancient tradition usually sees hundreds of people dance through the town's streets.

Bosses say the decision has been made with great sadness but they must ensure the safety of the public and participants.

A number of virtual events are being planned to take place instead.

"Flora Day, which had been due to take place on Saturday, May 8th will no longer take place due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

"The Helston Flora Day Association has been following closely the Government information and guidance on the current pandemic and wishes to ensure the safety of the public, participants, and Helston Town Band members.

"It is therefore with great sadness that the association has taken the decision to cancel the day for a second year, Dance secretary, Nick Wills said a number of virtual events are in the planning to mark this year’s event and full details will be available on the Flora Day Association website at helstonfloraday.org.uk and on our Facebook Page.

"Please stay safe and we look forward to welcoming you to Helston in 2022."
