Hundreds of people across Cornwall are being encouraged to send letters to the government on what should be done to tackle climate change.

Green letter boxes have been placed on the Hayle Estuary, known to experience flooding at high tide.

The 'Letters for Tomorrow' campaign is calling on people to use them to write a letter on what they would like the future planet to look like if leaders act now.

Bronwen Smith-Thomas, Head of Campaigns and Politics at The Climate Coalition, said: "Our Letters to Tomorrow campaign is giving people the opportunity to voice their very personal hopes and fears around the climate crisis. It's designed to give those in power a rare glimpse into the everyday anxiety that the British public are feeling right now.

"Many of us will be familiar with the phrase 'the days are long but the years are short'. We believe it's crucial for our leaders to stop acting as though there's plenty of time to tackle the climate crisis and realise it is already here and affecting us all".

It comes as research by The Climate Coalition shows almost seven in 10 people are anxious about the impact of climate change and over three quarters in the UK believe ministers are not doing enough to tackle it.

The campaign hopes to collect thousands of letters from all across the country, with similar green post boxes being placed in areas affected by climate change in London, Manchester and Cardiff.

Following record breaking temperatures this summer, the climate crisis has never been so tangible and concerning.

Nearly seven out of 10 Brits (69%) are anxious about the impact of climate change and only 23% believe the Government is doing enough to tackle the climate crisis, according to research released today by The Climate Coalition

The letter boxes have been put in place for people in Cornwall to write a letter to 'loved ones in the future' about what they want their 'future planet to look like', with one letter being sent to the Prime Minister Liz Truss and Leader of the Opposition, Sir Kir Starmer, every day.

Bronwen continued: "This campaign is our call to arms. We need leaders to get on the right side of history now.

"We need to reduce our dependence on expensive and polluting gas, by investing in more efficient homes and replacing fossil fuels with affordable renewable energy, and start protecting and restoring nature in the UK and abroad".
