Several gravestones have been smashed into pieces in a graveyard in a small Cornwall village.

It is believed that the damage caused outside St Piran's Church in Perranarworthal, between Truro and Penryn, was most likely deliberate.

It is understood to have occurred sometime between the 2nd and 8th of November.

One of the churchwardens took to Facebook to say they had been smashed to pieces and to let people know that the suspected vandalism has been reported to police.

He believes that three headstones were damaged in total and is appealing for any information.

Police have launched an investigation into what happened at the church.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We received a report of criminal damage at the Church of St Piran, Perranarworthal, in which a large headstone was smashed sometime between Tuesday 2nd November and Monday 8th November.

"Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, or email 101@dc.police.uk, quoting crime reference CR/098276/21."
