Full council are due to meet in Truro today.

Councillors will be debating two motions - one ensuring there's a focus on ocean recovery throughout the council’s work as well as calls for the Tamar Tolls to be abolished.

An update on the Capital Programme, a new appointment to the Audit Committee and recommendations from the Harbours Committee will all be on the agenda when Cornwall Council meets in Truro today (Tuesday 28 November).

The meeting, which will take place in the Council Chamber at County Hall (Lys Kernow) will also see Cabinet members take questions from members of the public and from fellow councillors.

Two motions have been put forward for debate at the meeting; one on ensuring there is a focus on ocean recovery throughout the council’s work, and a second calling for a review of the Tamar Crossings, which calls for the Tamar Tolls to be abolished.

A decision on whether the motions will be debated by the full council or referred to the Cabinet or a scrutiny committee will be made by the Chairman of the Council.

Cllr Linda Taylor, leader of Cornwall Council, said: "I look forward to the meeting next week, it is always good to meet with colleagues and to discuss the issues that matter to our residents.

“These meetings are the centre-point for democracy in Cornwall, and an invaluable part of the workings of the council, where we can update colleagues on our work."

The meeting, which starts at 10.30am, is open to members of the public.

An extraordinary meeting is also being held to discuss a devolution deal for Cornwall at 2.30pm.

The proposed deal includes:

  • Skills: Government will fully devolve the adult education budget from 2025, giving the Council control over how best to support adult learners
  • Green energy: The creation of a Cornwall Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) Commission to bring clean energy to the shores of Cornwall and elsewhere quicker
  • Cornish culture: The deal means Cornwall Council will be able to attend meetings of the British-Irish Council alongside the UK Government as an advisor on matters relating to the Cornish language. It also includes a further £500,000 to support Cornish distinctiveness and the Cornish language

The Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, said: “I am delighted to agree this Level 2 devolution deal with Cornwall, to bring more funding and powers out of Whitehall and directly into the hands of Cornish communities.

“Cornwall is a beautiful area with a rich history and a vibrant culture of creativity and innovation. This deal will help Cornwall to champion its heritage, create more opportunities for its residents and unleash its economic potential.”
