Dog dies after falling from cliffs on north Cornwall coast

Coastguard rescuers were called to the scene over the weekend

A dog has died after falling from cliffs on the north coast of Cornwall.

It happened as Western Cove, near Portreath, on Saturday afternoon and coastguard rescuers were called to the scene.

The pet was recovered from the bottom of cliffs but sadly could not be saved.

Owners in Cornwall are being urged to keep dogs on leads near cliff edges.

"At about 12:00 this afternoon we were alerted by Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre that a dog had fallen over the cliffs at the Western Cove near Portreath.

"We were joined by our colleagues from St. Agnes Coastguard Rescue Team at the scene and one of our Cliff Rescue Technicians recovered the animal from the bottom of the cliffs.

"It had sadly had not survived the fall."
