A new community food map has been launched to offer a guide to help people in south east Cornwall find food and support during the cost of living crisis.

The Family Foraging Kitchen have set it up to help people find free wild food and pin point support services that are around to tackle food insecurity.

Funding by the National Lottery, in addition to the map, the FFK have always offered free courses to low- and no-income households and for the last two years have delivered monthly Wild Food Boxes to households in need around the Rame Peninsula.

Vix Hill-Ryder, company founder, said': “Despite delivering our free courses and food boxes, I felt we needed to do more to help.

“It seemed people were not only struggling here on Rame but still largely unaware of how many wonderful services we have on the peninsula all working to address the same issue.

"We can show you where and how to put wild, seasonal, fresh produce on your plate but other organisations have walk in pantries of stable cupboard ingredients on offer. Some rescue food from large supermarkets which would otherwise have gone to landfill, available on a pay as you feel donation basis.

"We wanted something that linked all local services together. A resource that we could put into a person’s hands, guiding them to the right thing for them and to show just how much help is available".

The cost of living crisis is affecting the nation’s diets, reducing both the frequency of meals households consume and their nutritional value. In April, over two million residents skipped at least one meal because they could not afford or could not access food.

Alongside the maps being released, Vix and team have just finished filming the second year of their online series, Foraging and Feasting. Now available to watch for free on their YouTube channel, Vix guides you through the best seasonal wild ingredients and how to turn them into affordable meals to feed the family on a budget.
