People in Cornwall urged 'use common sense' in 24 hours leading up to lockdown
Cornwall Council wants to avoid a surge in coronavirus cases before lockdown comes into force
Cornwall Council’s public health team is urging people to be sensible in the 24 hours leading up to the lockdown in order to avoid a surge in coronavirus cases.
The warning comes as cases in the county have started to increase considerably, in line the national picture in other areas of the country, with the highest rise in cases in hospitality settings.
The warning is that if we don’t properly social distance now while we are out enjoying the last of our freedom, we risk spreading the virus in even greater numbers than we have been seeing.
The NHS needs all of us to play our part and help keep the pressure down on their services and hospital beds.
“I want to thank everyone in Cornwall who has followed the rule of six, worn face coverings, kept up with social distancing and played their part in keeping the numbers low for so long. But to contain the spread of the virus across Cornwall we need to continue with it.
“While you might think that one night in the pub stood near 20 or 30 other people might not make a difference - it will. It’s exactly events like that where the virus spreads really easily. So please, if you are going to go out over the next couple of days, please continue to be covid safe.”
Dr Ruth Goldstein, Deputy Director of Public Health for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
“We know this lockdown will be a blow to our hospitality industry, and that many of you might be feeling weary from the rules, but it’s now more important than ever to stick to the rules for this last little bit before lockdown.
“You might be tempted by one last trip to the pub or last trip out for dinner, but we ask that you please still stick to the rules and stay safe. We need to keep Cornwall in the best shape so that we can come out of this in a good position in four week’s time.”
