School children in St Austell have dedicated a special version of 'Hallelujah' to the people of Ukraine.

Years 5 and 6 in St Mewan Primary School Choir sang lyrics written by teachers, to show their solidarity with families in Ukraine and refugees fleeing the invasion.

The heartwarming video, posted on Facebook on 7th March, has had thousands of views and shares.

Since the video was uploaded, an extra verse has been added to the full song.

10-year-old Tia-Lili is one of those involved and said: "It must be very scary for Ukraine and little children from there. In the hall we have donations to give to Ukraine. We're trying to help them as much as we can but there's not a lot we can do".

10-year-old Florrie added: "We would like to help them as much as we can because we feel really sorry for them. I feel really proud. I feel really emotional as well".

The post reads: "Today our Year 5 and 6 choir recorded a very special version of 'Hallelujah'. Special thanks to the teachers who rewrote the lyrics so quickly so that our children could perform this today. We dedicate this song to the people of Ukraine. 💙💛"

Elaine Badger, the headteacher at St Mewan, told us she was not expecting a reaction so big and they are eventually looking to release it as a single.

10-year-old Rowan said: "It feels really good because we can't really do much for Ukraine but we can do some stuff to help them as a community like we're sending over tonnes of equipment over to them and also we're singing a song".

10-year-old Leo added: "It feels really good, doing anything to help will help. It feels brilliant because for some of us it's really emotional because my Mum is from the Ukraine and she has relatives in the Ukraine and it's just really sad".

St Mewan Primary School has also been collecting donations for the cause and you can read more on the school's Facebook page.
