People heading to the Christmas Light Switch-on in Truro this Friday (18 November) are being encouraged to travel using the Park and Ride or by train.

RMT members working on buses in Cornwall are taking strike action on the same day as Festive Friday, in an ongoing row over pay and conditions.

Truro Business Improvement District (BID) say they want to help prevent the city from becoming gridlocked.

They say they have been told by Cornwall Council that Truro's Park and Ride will continue to operate on Friday and is not affected by planned industrial action.

It will be running a later service on the day, with the last service leaving the city at 9.15pm.

Great Western Railway do not have any planned strike action taking place on Friday. However, RMT members plan to walkout on Saturday 19 and Monday 21 instead, when there is expected to be disruption on Network Rail's Western route.

Get festive in Truro

Christmas celebrations launch in Truro this Friday, when Festive Friday returns for the second year.

Festive Friday is sponsored by Great Western Railway and is being brought to the city by Truro BID, in partnership with Truro City Council and Pirate FM.

As well as the Christmas Lights Switch-on, Festive Friday includes other events to celebrate the start of the festive season.

From 3.00pm Pirate FM’s Johnny Cowling and Lucy Start will be broadcasting out and about in Truro, building up to the much-anticipated switch-on. There will be special entertainment from 5.00pm organised by Hall for Cornwall. At 7.00pm the lights will be switched-on by Johnny Cowling, Lucy Start, Truro’s Town Crier Lionel Knight, and cast members from Hall for Cornwall’s Christmas Show Treasure Island.

Following the switch-on, there will be a celebratory parade around Truro featuring performers, music and Father Christmas in his sleigh.
