A homeowner on the Isle of Wight has had a surprise after fearing her house had been ransacked by a burglar on Valentine's Day.

A badger chewed through a wooden back door and raided a kitchen cupboard for food at the home in Ryde.

The animal is believed to have fallen from a wall into an enclosed courtyard and had been trying to escape.

Homeowner Charlotte Glazier wrote on Facebook: "I think it perhaps got scared by a neighbour's dog and scrambled up whatever is on the other side, or it toppled off the wall, which might of been part of its usual run."

The badger headed upstairs to a bedroom where an animal rescue expert found her asleep in an overturned bin.

The unexpected visitor was captured by Badger Trust Isle of Wight and released outside where she trotted off into the night.

In a Facebook post, Badger Trust Isle of Wight said: "Very feisty and keen to get back home, a few minutes outside to get her bearings and the cage was opened and she was off into the night."
